Cycle annuel du peuplement macrobenthique du port d'Alger ArchiMer
Rebzanizahaf, C; Bellan, G; Bakalem, A; Romano, Jc.
The impact of pollution on the macrobenthos was studied through a seasonal cycle by analysis of samples taken at 34 stations in the different basins of Algiers harbour (Mustapha, Agha and Vieux Port). Physical and chemical characteristics were measured in the water column (temperature, salinity, seston, dissolved oxygen) and sediment (pH). The faunistic composition of the stations was assessed according to the ecological significance of species or groups of species as determinants of pollution. There were close correlations between the physical and chemical characteristics at che stations and the spatial distribution of species and species assemblages. Seasonal variation in populations was most marked in Mustapha basin, less noticeable in Agha and weak in...

Distribution quantitative de la macrofaune benthique du peuplement des cailloutis dans le détroit du Pas de Calais (Manche orientale, France) ArchiMer
Migne, A; Davoult, D.
Because of strong tidal currents, the bottom of the Dover Strait consists of coarse sediment which is colonized by a pebble community. A quantitative study, based on 0.1 m(2) quadrat samples taken by divers, was conducted on this community to establish the richness of benthic macrofauna (in terms of biomass and diversity) and to provide conclusive data on global community structure (spatial and temporal heterogeneity, trophic structure). Eight samples were taken between June 1992 and June 1993, eight replicates being taken on each sampling visit. One hundred and one species were identified, in 10 zoological groups, and a mean biomass of 281 g.m(-2) (ash free dry weight) was calculated. The Shannon diversity index was low (H' = 1.24) because of the strong...

Ecological boundaries in estuaries: macrobenthic ß-diversity in the Rio de la Plata system (34-36°S) OceanDocs
Giberto, D.A.; Bremec, C.; Cortelezzi, A.; Rodrigues Capitulo, A.; Brazeiro, A..
In this study, we analyse spatial patterns of macrobenthic communities of the Río de la Plata system, and assess the species turnover or beta diversity and its relationship with environmental gradients. Macrobenthic samples and physico-chemical parameters were collected from 20 sampling sites along a transect of 560 km, including the freshwater (FW), estuarine (ES)and marine (MA)sectors. Three main assemblages corresponding to the above mentioned sectors were defined with multivariate analysis (cluster, MDS). In total 134 taxa were recorded, 81 in MA, 33 in FW and 38 in ES, represented mainly by polychaete, mollusc and crustacean species. Depth, salinity and clay showed the strongest correlation with the observed faunal patterns (pw=0.62; BIO-ENV...

Evaluation of trawling disturbance on macrobenthic invertebrate communities in the Bay of Biscay, France: Abundance biomass comparison (ABC method) ArchiMer
Vergnon, Rémi; Blanchard, Fabian.
The necessity to move from a traditional fishery management to an ecosystem approach is now acknowledged. Indicators are required to support the development of this approach. For example, community indicators have been proposed to assess the impact of fishing. We tested here the applicability of one such community indicator, the abundance-biomass comparison (ABC method), as a measure of the impact of bottom trawling (years of sampling: 2001 and 2003) on the benthic invertebrates-typically starfishes, crabs, squat lobsters, shrimps and large hard-shelled molluscs-of "Grande Vasiere", a major French fishing zone, in the Bay of Biscay. The ABC method is generally used as an impact indicator for different types of physical, biological and anthropogenic...

Influence of spatial scales of observation on temporal change in diversity and trophic structure of fine-sand communities from the English Channel and the southern North Sea ArchiMer
Ghertsos, K; Luczak, C; Dewarumez, Jm; Dauvin, Jc.
Along the coast of France in the English Channel, muddy fine-sand communities are restricted to bays and estuaries, but in the southern North Sea they stretch out to larger areas (mesoscale continuum). We studied three regions containing these communities, each subject to different hydrological conditions and contrasting trophic structures of the water column. The Bay of Morlaix was strongly affected by the "Amoco Cadiz" oil spill of 1978 and recovered slowly. The Bay of Seine is influenced by high levels of nutrient input from the River Seine. A retention structure exists in the eastern part ensuring recruitment stability. The Gravelines area in the southern North Sea was invaded by the American jackknife clam (Ensis directus), which became a key species...

Interplay between abiotic factors and species assemblages mediated by the ecosystem engineer Sabellaria alveolata (Annelida: Polychaeta) ArchiMer
Jones, Auriane; Dubois, Stanislas; Desroy, Nicolas; Fournier, Jerome.
abellaria alveolata is a gregarious polychaete that uses sand particles to build three-dimensional structures known as reefs, fixed atop rocks or built on soft sediments. These structures are known to modify the local grain-size distribution and to host a highly diversified macrofauna, altered when the reef undergoes disturbances. The goal of this study was to investigate the different sedimentary and biological changes associated with the presence of a S. alveolata reef over two contrasting seasons (late winter and late summer), and how these changes were linked. Three different sediments were considered: the engineered sediment (the actual reef), the associated sediment (the soft sediment surrounding the reef structures) and a control soft sediment (i.e....

Larval and adult density of the porcellanid crab Petrolisthes armatus (Anomura: Porcellanidae) in an Amazon estuary, northern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Oliveira,Danielly Brito de; Silva,Dalila Costa; Martinelli-Lemos,Jussara Moretto.
Petrolisthes armatus (Gibbes, 1850) is a porcellanid crab with a wide geographical distribution. In the present study we analyzed variations in the abundance of P. armatus adults and larvae over an annual cycle in the Marapanim estuary of the Amazon coastal zone, in the northeastern portion of the state of Pará, Brazil. Particularly, we focused on the presence of ovigerous females and timing of larval release, with the aim of elucidating reproductive patterns in a tropical estuarine system. The mean density of P. armatus larvae (zoea I and II) correlated positively with the salinity of the shallow waters of the estuary, whereas the abundance of adults correlated with the salinity registered in water samples collected from the benthic environment. There was...

Oceanologic study of an open coastal area in the Ionian sea with emphasis on its benthic fauna and some zoogeographical remarks ArchiMer
Zenetos, A; Christianidis, S; Pancucci, Ma; Simboura, N; Tziavos, C.
The macrobenthic faunal composition, sedimentology and physical characteristics were investigated in an open coastal area of the Greek Ionian Sea. Hydrographic parameters were recorded at 26 stations using a CTD profiler during nine cruises performed between 1990 and 1991, while benthic samples were collected in November 1990 and April 1991 at 22 stations with the aid of a Ponar grab. Macrobenthic variety indicated an area of high scientific interest : 351 species in all, 18 of which are new to the Creek fauna. Furthermore, 10 species are previously unrecorded in the Eastern Mediterranean. Of the biological indices estimated, species richness was comparable to that of other open Greek areas, while population density seemed to be a function of a) depth and...

The diversity and richness patterns of bivalve molluscs were studied on the continental shelf of Ubatuba (23º38'S, 45º14'W and 23º25'S, 44º51'W) between 15-120 metres depth. The samples were taken with a rectangular dredge and a beam trawl. The results showed higher values of richness, diversity and evenness for inner shelf (from coast to nearly 50 m depth) and greater values of abundance for outer shelf (from 50 to around 120 m depth). This pattern might be due to the higher instability of the inner shelf, which is influenced by the seasonal intrusion of the South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) and the occurrence of cold fronts. Sanders' rarefation curves, distribution and abundance curves and DIMO model were used and the results compared. The Qinghong's...

Population structure of the lancelet Branchiostoma caribaeum (Cephalochordata: Branchiostomidae) in the Baía de Guanabara, Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil Zoologia
Silva,Luis F. B. da; Tavares,Marcos; Soares-Gomes,Abilio.
Population structure of the lancelet Branchiostoma caribaeum Sandevall, 1853 was studied in four surveys, corresponding to austral seasons, in a tropical bay, southeast of Brazil. Abundance was higher in the spring and was positively correlated to coarse sediments, limiting its occurrence to some sectors of the sampling area. Body length and biomass differed seasonally but not between sexes. Sexually mature individuals occurred in all seasons, suggesting continuous breeding that is typical of tropical species. Variation in the frequency of small specimens indicates temporal differences in the intensity of breeding. The body length of recruits differed from other population of lancelets and the small length which B. caribaeum attained sexual maturity in...

Recovery of the macrobenthic community in the Valli di Comacchio, northern Adriatic Sea, Italy ArchiMer
Munari, C; Modugno, S; Ghion, F; Castaldelli, G; Fano, Ea; Rossi, R; Mistri, M.
The macrobenthic community structure of the Valli di Comacchio (northern Italy) was described in order to assess the ecological conditions of the main basins through 2001. In addition, the biotic data set gathered in 1997-1998 was compared to achieve an estimation of the eventual recovery of the lagoonal benthic assemblages. Four permanent sites (PI, M4, M5 and M6), located along a gradient of sediment texture and confinement, and representing four different areas of the lagoon, were sampled quarterly in 2001 for macrofauna and sedimentary variables (organic content, phytobenthic chlorophyll-a, depth of the redox potential discontinuity layer), and fortnightly for water variables (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and planktonic chlorophyll-a). Water...

Spatial distribution of bivalve mollusc assemblages in the upwelling ecosystem of the continental shelf of Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Zoologia
Soares-Gomes,Abilio; Fernandes,Flavio da Costa.
Bivalve mollusks of the continental shelf of Cabo Frio upwelling ecosystem were sampled monthly from February 1986 to February 1987 along a 30 to 60 m depth gradient. Mactra petiti Orbigny, 1846, and Tellina gibber Ihering, 1907 were constant species in 30 m; Nucula puelcha Orbigny, 1846, Adrana patagonica Orbigny, 1846, T. petitiana, T. gibber, and Corbula patagonica Orbigny, 1846 in 45 m; and N. puelcha, T. gibber, C. patagonica, and C. caribaea in 60 m. The number of rare species was similar along the depth gradient, ranging from six to ten species. The number of common species was higher in 60 m than in 30 m. Some species showed a continuous distribution but changed the frequency and abundance along the bathymetric gradient. The mean density was higher...

The ecological quality status of the Bay of Seine and the Seine estuary: Use of biotic indices ArchiMer
Dauvin, Jean-claude; Ruellet, Thierry; Desroy, Nicolas; Janson, Anne-laure.
Using recent indices developed, in part, for use under the European Water Framework Directive (AMBI, BENTIX, BOPA BQI, I2EC and the trophic index ITI), the ecological quality status of two highly contaminated environments-the Bay of Seine and the Seine estuary (Eastern English Channel)-was determined on several spatial and temporal scales. Data from 604 observations gathered over a 14-year period (1988-2002) were analyzed, and the results used to show the relationship between biotic indices, environmental variables and classic descriptors (e.g., number of species, total abundance, dominance index, ES(50) and Shannon/Brillouin diversities). Though the specific ecological quality (EcoQ) values calculated with the various indices were different, the overall...

The ICES Study Group on the North Sea Benthos Project 2000 undertook to integrate recent (1999–2002) macrobenthic infaunal and environmental data from various national sources. The main aim was to compare the outcome with that of the ICES North Sea Benthos Survey conducted in 1986, to identify any significant changes and their likely causes. In the process, the exercise yielded valuable lessons for the conduct of international collaborative programmes, as well as insights into the utility of a range of interpretational tools. These are timely in view of increasing requirements for periodic sea-wide assessments of quality status to meet international obligations, such as those under OSPAR, ICES, HELCOM, and EU auspices for European waters. This paper...
